One of the most valuable foundations we begin before puppies leave our home is introducing them to a crate.

Unfortunately, some people think of a crate as a form of punishment. When introduced properly, however, a crate becomes one of the greatest gifts you can give your puppy.

Dogs are naturally denning animals. A properly introduced crate becomes a safe, familiar place where puppies can rest, relax, and feel secure.

Rather than fearing the crate, our goal is for puppies to see it as their own comfortable bedroom.

Why We Encourage Every Family to Continue Crate Training

We strongly encourage our puppy families to continue crate training after bringing their puppy home because it provides benefits for both the puppy and the family.

Better Sleep for Everyone

Young puppies need a tremendous amount of sleep.

A crate provides a quiet, secure environment where they can settle down and rest without constant stimulation.

Many puppies also sleep more peacefully at night when they have a consistent bedtime routine and a familiar sleeping space.

When puppies learn to relax in their crate, families often sleep better too.

Crates Help With Potty Training

One of the biggest advantages of crate training is helping establish good potty habits.

Dogs naturally try to keep their sleeping area clean.

When used appropriately, a properly sized crate encourages puppies to hold their bladder until they are taken outside, helping them learn a consistent potty routine.

Crates should never be used to leave a puppy confined for excessive periods of time. Instead, they become an important teaching tool while puppies develop bladder control.

Safety Comes First

Puppies explore the world with their mouths.

Unfortunately, that means they may chew:

• Electrical cords

• Shoes

• Children's toys

• Medications

• Household cleaners

• Furniture

• Clothing

• Plants

• Plastic objects

Even the most attentive owner cannot supervise every second of the day.

A crate provides a safe environment whenever direct supervision isn't possible.

Knowing your puppy is safe allows you to shower, cook dinner, run a quick errand, or sleep at night with much greater peace of mind.

Building Independence

One concern many new owners have is that their puppy cries when left alone.

Like children, puppies must gradually learn that being alone for short periods is safe and temporary.

Early learning, positive socialization, gentle handling, and crate training foundations are all part of helping each puppy begin life with the best possible start.

While every family will continue building on these foundations after bringing their puppy home, we hope the work we begin during those first eight weeks helps make the transition easier for everyone.
